Prodigal
Whew! Last time I was logged on here my computer got all huffy on me and wouldn't let me start up Windows.
My in-house computer maven just sorted it out and I'm back
This seems to be a pattern in my life, to get thrown out of odd places and inanimate objects.
Anyway, here I am again, once again, with little of any great import to say.
The Cello duet is nearing completion, another surprisingly profound work.
I fantasize about getting Walter Gray and Joshua Roman to play it.
Also I'm preparing an orchestral piece for the ACF's Minnesota Orchestra Composers Institute whachacallit.
This piece is a barn burner.
Guaranteed to keep those Minnesota musicians warm during their frosty, clangingly frozen winters.
It's working title is "Minnesota Mittens; how to stay warm in winter"
It is a heart warming, crowd pleasing orchestral frolic.
By golly, if you were to program this one last, your audience would even stay through an evening of twelve tone academia.
Jeremy Denk would love this piece.
You wanna appeal to the "youth market"?
Huh?
Here ya go.
Ticket sales lagging? (SSO only filling 60% these days, but they can't have it, can they?)
You'll be selling out SRO's.
They'll pay to stand in the street outside the hall!
No foolin'
Get 'em while they're hot!
Supplies are limited!!
But wait....there's more!!!
Ummm.........No I guess there's not.

Quite a popular guy, this Walter Gray. Personally I think if you are soliciting Cello players you do not want to leave out Yo Yo Ma.
The Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, presented each season by the Minnesota Orchestra and American Composers Forum in cooperation with the American Music Center, provides the opportunity for up to nine composers from across the nation to participate in an intensive week-long immersion into the world of a major American symphony orchestra.
The Composer Institute, which to our knowledge is unique in the nation, features orchestral rehearsals, a public performance, and numerous targeted workshops with leading music industry professionals on musical, career, business and professional development issues. The Institute nurtures the participants’ musical acumen and broadens their career management skills, assisting in their growth as artists and community leaders. Many participants have said that the Composer Institute was the single most important experience of their musical educations. Seminar topics include many not offered elsewhere, including advanced instrumental and orchestral writing, copyrights, commissioning, licensing, publishing, promotion, music preparation, public speaking, working with conductors and union orchestras, community residencies, CD and media production, and working in educational settings, among others.
The Institute is co-directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis and Minnesota Orchestra Artistic Planning Associate Beth Cowart. Prior to and following the rehearsals and performance, composers receive feedback from Kernis, Minnesota Orchestra members, and Music Director Osmo Vänskä. There is no fee to the participating composers and many area composers who are members of the American Composers Forum audit the seminars free of charge.
Beginning with the 2003-04 season, a Composer Institute alumnus is invited to compose a piece for each Young People's concert season.
The next Composer Institute is set for November 1-8, 2008.
PLEASE NOTE!: The Composer Institute now features an evening concert at Orchestra Hall, conducted by Osmo Vänskä, showcasing all works selected for this season's Institute. Mark your calendar for Friday, November 7, 2008
BARN BURNER, an orchestral piece by Douglas Palmer; aka MINNESOTA MITTENS. This sounds like another grand evening at the newly constructed in our mind's PALMER PALACE OF THE ARTS over there in Madrona.
SSO would sell their souls, literally, in order to get the kind of quality piece to play that Palmer could provide, if he were not persona non gratis, the invisible man, the sidewalk stalker, the hustler, the litegator, the solitary thin figure in strange armor that stands outside the Castle of Beneroya challenging the cowards to daily duels, enit?
Sorry to hear that you encountered cyber difficulties. I hate it when that happens.
